NFTs for Social Good.
It has always been our mission with the Satoshibles project to give back and get involved with incentives that are a force for social good. We decided early on to donate 10 ETH (at the time $33,845) of our mint proceeds to a cause voted on by the community. We presented a list of organizations listed on The Giving Block, a website that allows non-profits the ability to accept cryptocurrency donations.
Once the votes were counted, the team were happy to see that the community collectively chose The Built with Bitcoin Foundation - a fantastic organization dedicated to creating equitable opportunity by providing clean water, access to quality education, sustainable farming, and humanitarian support, all powered by Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies.
After some discussions between Built with Bitcoin and the Satoshibles team, it was decided that the funds would be used in a variety of ways:
- A complete water well system
- A new computer lab
- Install a solar electricity system
- Provide laptops to students
- Landscaping and fencing to protect the area for the Kaduna State school campus and community in Nigeria
The largest part of the project was building the water distribution center in Zhaita Village, Abuja, Nigeria. Prior to this, citizens of Zhaita Village needed to walk miles in search of water that had no guarantee of being clean or even safe to drink.
Now, with the newly constructed water distribution center, the community has less worries about the safety of the drinking water, or whether or not everyone has enough to drink.
Then we had an idea!
During the first phone call between BWB and satoshibles, both founders were introducing their projects to each other. We explained to them the process in creating an NFT project from art generation to smart contract deployment and BWB told us all about the campuses they have built all around Africa with a total of around 500 students!
An idea was born, why don’t we empower those students through their art, we create a template for them and collect artwork from all 500 students and launch a 100% donated NFT project with the purpose of building more schools and infrastructure. It was a very ambitious project, one that both teams tackled head on. We also gave ourselves a tight deadline as we wanted to launch the project on Crypto Giving Tuesday — which at the time was in 2 months.
The Satoshibles team created the template for the students to paint on. The idea was simple, we asked students ranging from ages 3–12 a question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”. Students painted police, nurses, doctors, taxi drivers, pilots, the response was amazing.
In the end we gathered over 500 students’ art work. The BWB team scanned each one and sent them over to the Satoshibles team for processing. Once processed, we generated 10,000 unique NFTs, created the smart contract and launched!
We called the project “Built With NFT” and made it our mission to show how NFTs can be used as a tool for social good. Here is a discussion both teams had after launch:
To date, the project has donated around $50,000 directly to Built With Bitcoin from 100% of the NFT sales. The foundation was able to use these funds to renovate the only nursery school on Isla Tasajera, El Salvador.
They fixed the electrics & plumbing, gave the place a fresh lick of paint, bought new furniture & stocked up on stationary, books & art supplies. This is just the beginning.
The project was launched on Ethereum, however, to maximize the reach of the Built With NFT project, both teams decided to also allow minting of the NFTs using Bitcoin via Stacks.
With the help of the team at Gamma (one of the largest NFT marketplaces on Stacks), the collection is now one of the first NFTs to be minted across multiple blockchains at the same time. We are only getting started with this project and are looking forward to seeing all the amazing things it will enable in the future.
